Unwanted Elements in Video Games: 5 Things I Wish Would Disappear

I love playing video games like many others. It helps me to forget about my daily stress. Besides, I am a fantasy fan. I like to imagine myself in a fantasy world such as Lord of the Rings or Harry Potter. Video Games are one of the best ways to travel to such a world and literally live in it. So I would say my Playstation is the Narnia Door for me!

As much as I love video games, there are some stuff in them that are annoying. Cause me to shout and become angry. It happens and you know it if you play video games. Sometimes causes you to throw the game controller which is not cool since they are expensive!

In this post, I like to share 5 things that I wish video games wouldn’t have.

1. Complex Gear System

This is one of the most nerve-racking features these days is on trend, Specially in open-world games. So, it is like your character has armor and weapons. You can level up this stuff by collecting items on the map and also the skill points you get through the game. Basically, you make your character stronger and also look more fancy with these enhancements. Sounds fun, until the game goes crazy with them and that’s the problem!

The main problem with these gear systems is that most of them are useless! For example, it happens often that you find some item, then you realize that if you use it your gear weakens and levels down! Why? I mean why? why should I find an item at the end stages of a game that makes my guy weaker?

I generally think these new gear systems are just too much. Like every other trend that starts to get spoiled and annoying after a while. These games take energy to finish since you have to solve a crazy complex gear system to get the most out of your character. Now imagine the next game you buy also has the same or even more complex system! It is not only frustrating but also just boring. Make the games look similar to each other! Not fun!

2. Long Audio-conversion to follow the Story

I recently played Horizon Zero Dawn on PS4 (I know, too late). It has a problem that is prominent these days in the games that claim to have a Story like a movie. So the thing is often you find a new guy or an audio recording that tells you a LONG story that happened before. It aims to give context to your game and helps you to feel that you are in the game world. The idea is very nice. But implementation is not!

Mostly you have just to stand and do nothing and listen to the audio story. It is boring. Especially when the story is being told by some super complex weird wording. I mean who is this dude? Shakespeare?

And why should I listen to this Podcast in the middle of the game? Because you were not able to make a proper movie-like screenplay? Now I have to sit and listen to this boring thing? come one!

3. No difficulty change

So you buy a game made by From Software. You tell yourself “I wanna have a cool gaming night!”

Then you start the game and keep dying on the first steps in the game. Then you tell yourself that “Ah, I think I need to lower the difficulty. This is hard”. Then you go to the setting and you notice: Oh wait, there is no difficulty level!

Happened to me with Bloodborne. Then I search and it turned out it is a genre apparently! Games with no difficulty level option! I heard people who made this says something like “We want to give the same experience to all the people who play our games!” well guess what, it doesn’t!

People have different backgrounds in gaming. Some are gamers, others play casual. Also, some can spend hours per day on a game and others a couple of hours per week. How does your game give the same experience to these groups of people at the same level?

4. Revealing the Puzzle by a side Character

You are playing a cool Sony exclusive game like God Of War. You reach an interesting puzzle that you need to solve. So you are taking your time to think about it. Then out of a sudden, the dude accompanying you tells you something that solves the puzzle or makes it obvious! Yeah, ruins the moment!

Happens in general in games with a story. I don’t know why. Why are you ruining the game on purpose?! Just let the player decides whether she/he wants a hint or not. Couldn’t you just give me a minute? I am human not a computer that I can solve this in a second!

5. Spoiling the new Game’s feature

I was playing Uncharted 3 Remastered a long time ago. The game introduced a new hand-to-hand combat system that lets you time your punching and defense. Was very interesting back in those days. Until the game spoiled it in a way that became boring and annoying! So you are about to finish the game and find out what happens to Drake. Then some random dudes jump on you. So the game wants you to use the new combat feature. But a bit too much!

This was an example. Happens in lots of games. They introduce a new thing. Then they go crazy with it to the point you actually start to hate this new feature! I know you guys are excited about developing this new thing. I am a programmer and I get it. But have some moderation!

The End.
